- Abstract
Following an article to the IAF conference 2006 on the elaboration of a European Space Policy and the development of ESA’s long-term plan within this context, it is proposed to provide participants of the IAF conference 2007 with an overview about major provisions adopted by Ministers with regard to the European Space Policy at the fourth meeting of the European Space Council in May 2007. The article intends to highlight key messages of the Ministerial resolution as well as of relevant background documents such as the European Space Policy and European Space Programme.
The paper shall first outline the context and perspective within which the European Space Policy was elaborated, recalling the motivation for a common European Space Policy, major actors involved in its elaboration and major milestones achieved since 2003.
Having set the scene, the paper shall go on to highlight key political messages of the Ministerial resolution and provide more detailed explanations about the overall European vision and strategy, thereby underlining the specificity of a European approach to space.
Addressing the planned implementation of the European Space Policy and future steps envisaged, the article will subsequently present major key actions identified, including in the areas of environment and security as well as international relations.
Finally, the article shall provide insights about the specific role and responsibility of the European Space Agency in the implementation of the newly adopted European Space Policy.
