    Abstract
    This papers gives an technical, organization and programmatic overview of the CNES funded activities to prepare Future Launchers. It includes a description of the various types of activities: advanced concept studies and prospective, research and technology, technological demonstrators development and system preliminary studies. The  overall logic and objectives of these activities are presented. For each type of activities, the  detailed objectives are given as well as the organization implemented by CNES and its partners to conduct these activities. The coherence and/or heritage of other European programs is also described. The paper also includes a technical description of the major parts of this effort and associated results obtained since 2004: propulsion and system demonstrators, system studies over the whole payload range. Finally, lessons learned and recommendations are proposed.
