    Abstract
The preliminary design of sounding rockets is developed with the aid of different computational codes that differ in complexity, application and accuracy. In each phase of the development a more adequate code is used, taking into consideration the complexity of the geometry and the level of detail necessary to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics and the performance of the sounding rocket. Sometimes the involved geometry does not present a great complexity and computational programs that use semi-empirical models are used. The objective of this work is to evaluate some vehicle configurations for a high performance suborbital space vehicle under development in Brazil for microgravity experiments. The analysis considers the compilation of aerodynamic data for normal/lateral force, pitch moment, center of pressure and static margin for the variations of geometrical configuration for Mach numbers ranging from subsonic up to supersonic, mass distribution and propulsive data. The paper summarizes the results obtained within this study, and brings some recommendations that could be useful in the design of other space vehicles.
