- Abstract
The 2010 Asteroid Global Warning System technical paper competition asked entrants to design an innovative and effective global Near Earth Object (NEO) impact warning system. The challenge was to envision a system, using existing or near-future sources of NEO orbits and worldwide communication, to quickly warn members of the public that could be affected by an impact in a manner that would not confuse, cause panic, or be ignored. Teams of up to three were given the opportunity to have their ideas heard by authoring a technical paper which were all then judged by a panel of aerospace and planetary defence experts. The papers were judged based on the quality of the concept description, technical detail, and originality. This competition was open to all students and young professionals worldwide with the aim of encouraging the entrants to become the next generation of planetary defence experts. The competition has been run by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) NEO Working Group; a team dedicated to representing the opinions and ideas of students and young professionals to the United Nations programme on space applications and the worldwide NEO community. The rules are an evolution of the successful 'Move an Asteroid' competition which ran in 2008 and 2009.
