- Abstract
The paper presents a part of a Cosmic Study which has been performed by an international IAA team and edited by Petra Retterg, Mark Willianson and Mahulena Hofmann (rapporteur: Marc Haese). From the legal perspecive, the question has to be raised whether legal instruments are the optimal means for improving current methods of planetary protection. The study analysis this question but does not give any direct answer; it does not recommend any new international treaty mechanism but suggests several interpetations of the present framework which could be incorporated into a new UN resolution.
