    Abstract
On the 50th anniversary of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) we look back at the USA members of the first year and their contributions to astronautics. Just over a year after the creation of the IAA, Fred Durant III reported to the American Rocket Society on the formation of the IAA and included an appendix in his report from Frank J. Malina who was at that time the Deputy-Director of the IAA. Mr. Malina’s report which is dated 1 March 1961 lists the the initial members. Thirty of these initial 76 members represented the USA. For each of these members we explore their contributions prior to their involvement with the IAA as well as their contributions to astronautics throughout their careers.
