    Abstract
In 1987, the International Space University (ISU) was founded as an institution of higher learning, dedicated to the development of outer space for peaceful purposes through an \underline{i}nternational, \underline{i}ntercultural and \underline{i}nterdisciplinary approach – the '3Is'.

Starting from its Space Studies Program (SSP), a professional development program that has convened annually every summer since 1988 at locations around the world, ISU now operates from its central campus in Strasbourg, France and offers Master of Science in Space Studies (MSS), Master of Science in Space Management (MSM), and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degrees, as well as other professional development programs such as the Executive Space Course, the Space Odyssey Institute and the Southern Hemisphere Summer Space Program.

As of December 2011, there were over 3200 ISU alumni from more than 100 countries, while ISU faculty members include astronauts, space agency leaders, space engineers, space scientists, managers, and experts in space law and policy comprising an international collection of experts in technical and non-technical space-related fields.

This paper will review the origins and development of ISU and its programs and curricula over its first twenty-five years, describing their particular distinguishing aspects and lessons learned. The impact of ISU on the global space community will also be considered and ISU’s plans for the future outlined.
