- Abstract
An International Lunar Decade Campaign to promote further space exploration, and development is modeled on the successful International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, organized by the International Council for Science. The International Council for Science (ICS) established the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) in 1958 with its activities organized through Commissions: Commission B: Studies the Earth-Moon System, Planets and Small Bodies An International Lunar Decade Campaign would involve research activities not only involving Commission B, but also others that could use the Moon and Near-Moon Space as platforms for their studies. The ICS also established interdisciplinary bodies such as that for Antarctic Research. The Moon is a most promising location for a similar interdisciplinary initiative (including, Radio Astronomy and Space Science, Solar-‘terrestrial Physics, World Data System, and Data for Science and Technology. and Future Earth). ICS members could use an International Lunar Decade to advance exploration and economic development of the Moon and Cislunar Space including: 1 IAU (International Astronomical Union) 2 ICA (International Cartographic Association) 3 IUCR(International Union of Crystallography) 4 ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) 5 IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics) 6 IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences) 7 IUMRS (International Union of Materials Research Societies) 8 IUMS (International Union of Microbiological Sciences) 9 IUPAB (International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics) 10 IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) 11 IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) 12 IUPESM (International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine) 13 IUPS (International Union of Physiological Sciences) 14 IUPsyS (International Union of Psychological Sciences) 15 IUSS (International Union of Soil Science) 16 URSI (Union Radio Scientifique Internationale) 17 IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) 18 IUVSTA (International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Application) 19 UIS (Union Internationale de Speleologie) The work of these organizations can supplement the Lunar Exploration Roadmap (LER) developed by NASA’s Lunar Exploration Analysis Group, and Strategic Knowledge Gaps and the Technology Development Roadmaps developed by NASA. The ICS, however, must also rely on collaboration of the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG). A Technical working Committee of the ICG NSS for communications, positioning and navigation extending to cislunar distances and the surface of the is recommended as part of an International Lunar Survey Working Group. The above mentioned institutions & national space agencies are the foundations for the proposed ILD campaign.
