- Abstract
In January 2016, during their twenty-sixth ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, the African Heads of State and Government adopted a new continental African Space Policy and Strategy. The policy, which was developed over several years, was described as the first of several concrete steps to realize an African space programme, as one of the flagship programmes of the African Union's Agenda 2063. This paper will trace the context and the processes that led to the formulation of this new policy. It will also provide an overview of the salient contents of the policy and an assessment of the governance and implementation frameworks that will need to be put in place to ensure its effective implementation.
