    Abstract
KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) program is sponsored by Republic of Korea and managed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). KOMPSAT-1 was launched in Dec., 1999 and flied in a Sun-synchronous low Earth Orbit, carrying EOC (Electro-Optical Camera), LRC (Low Resolution Camera), and SPS (Space Physics Sensor) including HEPD (High Energy Particle Detector) and IMS (Ionosphere Measurement Sensor). The primary mission of KOMPSAT-1 is to collect and process images to develop 1:25000 scale maps of the Korean Peninsula using EOC with 6.6 m resolution. The second mission of KOMPSAT-1 is to collect process large scale multi-spectral images of the ocean and Korean coastal areas to support biological oceanography. The HEPD instrument is designed to collect and provide information about the low Earth orbit particle environment, and the IMS is to globally monitor the plasma in the low Earth orbit. Another KOMPSAT system (KOMPSAT-2) with MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) is under development with a scheduled launch for Dec., 2005. The main purpose of KOMPSAT-2 is to secure geographic images, monitor rivers and pollutions, and take and analyze images to observe forestry and harvest of crops. For these missions, MSC is designed to have the capability of 1 m resolution in gray and 4 m resolution in color. Here, the current and future KOMPSAT program and its scientific applications are discussed.
