    Abstract
The December 26, 2004 earth quake and tsunami had a devastating impact on both people and economy. Responding to these disasters, the Indonesian government had been implementing relief and recovery management. One of the efforts made by the government is to utilize space remote sensing technology to provide immediate spatial information for initial assessment of the damages and losses as well as for rehabilitation and reconstruction long term plans.

This presentation shows the role of space remote sensing technology in the emergency response as well as mitigation toward the disasters mentioned above in the forms of following data processings and other related activities which were conducted by Indonesia National Institute of Aeronautics and Space-LAPAN:

    1. 3-D Information Generation and Simulation,

    2. Request and Acquiring very near real time satellite imageries under international cooperation and collaboration,

    3. Supporting the operation of Emergency Crisis Centers,

    4. Damages and Losses Rapid Assessment,

    5. Spatial Information Dissemination,

    6. Generation of Spatial Information for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.

These beneficial activities of the application of remote sensing mentioned above in disaster emergency response and mitigation not only showed the significant role of the technology but also showed the importance of international supports, cooperation and collaborations to whom Indonesia extends its sincere appreciation and deepest gratitude.
