    Abstract

Broadband Internet Access is growing and today about 10 % of the Internet connections are broadband in Europe. In almost all cases, ADSL is the technology. Satellite solutions are offered as well, mainly for locations outside the terrestrial reach. It is expected that this digital divide will increase in the extended Europe. Satellite solutions are fast but at least five times more expensive than terrestrial connections. This increases even more the digital divide. In this paper, the satellite technologies are reviewed and solutions are presented to provide Broadband Internet Access, which are competitive with terrestrial solutions.
