- Abstract
ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is developing standards to help minimize the creation of orbital debris during the launch, operation, and disposal of space systems. The ISO standards will capture best practices and specify specific actions to be taken by satellite manufacturers and operators to comply with guidelines recommended by the Interagency (Space) Debris Coordinating Committee. This paper discusses the ISO process for developing space debris mitigation standards, describes the framework being used for ISO standards in this area, and gives an overview, status, and schedule for debris mitigation-related standards that are currently in work. The paper discusses how the standards might be used by an entity purchasing space hardware to assure that the latest debris mitigation policies and processes are included in the development, launch, deployment, operation, and disposal of the final product.
