    Abstract
On February the 12th 2005, the new ARIANE 5 ECA, was successfully launched from Kourou, French Guyana. This success materialized more than two years of intensive works among European Industrial and Agencies teams to return to flight after the failure of December 2002. This new version is the European workhorse for transportation to space of heavy payload. The launcher is designed to place 9.5T in Geostationary Transfer Orbit with the capability to perform dual launch.
This paper presents the evolution from the generic version to the new Ariane5 ECA, the robustness and reliability approach which is followed in order to provide a good basis for the exploitation phase and deliver good service to Arianespace customers for LEO, GTO or deep space missions. Possible evolution routes are also discussed.
