    Abstract
The February 12, 2005 successful launch of the heavy lift version of Ariane 5 constitutes a key milestone in Ariane's history.

This paper will describe the work that has been performed over the last two years to consolidate the technical definition of Arianespace's new workhorse as well as the innovative commercial solutions developed during this period to address different customer needs. The paper will also explain how this new launch vehicle will take its position in the Arianespace range of launch vehicles consisting of Ariane, Soyuz and Vega.

Consolidation of Ariane 5 ECA definition:
The first task was to understand the root cause of the 2002 failure. A robust solution was defined and extensively qualified to consolidate the Vulcain 2 nozzle extension. Taking advantage of this additional time, a review of the launcher definition and justification was performed in particular through generalized independent cross checking activities as well as independent review. Two wet dress rehearsals were also performed to verify the operational aspects. This extensive work led to a perfect qualification chronology and flight of the launch vehicle on February 12, 2005.

    Innovative commercial solutions:
More than ever, service continuity was the key word at Arianespace during this two-year period. To address customer needs, 6 Ariane 5 Generic were successfully launched and the Ariane 5 Generic production activity was extended. In parallel, innovative commercial solutions were defined through Arianespace's association with Starsem for Soyuz launches as well as through the creation of the Launch Services Alliance, with Sea Launch and H-IIA.

Towards a range of Arianespace launch vehicles:
Addressing all the market segments through a range of launch vehicles and consolidating our offer through international cooperation are the next strategic goals for Arianespace. The creation of a Soyuz launch pad and the arrival of the Vega launcher at the Centre Spatial Guyanais (French Guiana) will offer the possibility to launch any kind of payload to any orbit in the coming years.
