    Abstract
We present a new numerical modeling tool for simulating the dynamics of elastic strings under arbitrary tension and under the influence of arbitrary external forces. The model will be validated by comparison with previous analytical results (e.g. Patamia and Jorgensen, 2004, Patamia and Campbell, 2005). We will then use it to study the interaction between the Earth's magnetosphere and the cable, and between the cable and the solar wind, during quiet time and intense magnetospheric conditions. We will also investigate the possibility of using the interaction with the magnetospheric magnetic field as a method for cable control, and for damping induced vibrations and large-scale oscillations.
