    Abstract

In May 1997 was held the I Conference in Remote Sensing Education in Mercosul, in Camboriu city, Southern region in Brasil. One of the results of this conference was the Camboriú Document, which presents the state-of-art of remote sensing education activities in the region. One of the most important discussion topics in the Conference was the lack of educational material for remote sensing education in Portuguese and Spanish, the regional languages, besides the high cost and the difficulty to get satellite image to use as educational material in classroom. For this reason INPE decided to create the EDUCA SeRe Program in 1998, through its Dissemination and Education Space Activities Area. The objective of this Program is to create educational material for remote sensing education, in all level, at low cost and available to everyone. This program is divided into four projects; one of them is designed to create a CDROM for remote sensing education. In 1998 it was developed the EDUCA SeRe II PROJECT–CD ROM for remote sensing education- Brazilian Capitals, developed with LANDSAT/TM images and the SPRINGView Software. At that time 3,000 copies were sold a very low price to the school teacher’s community. All the CD ROMs were sold in 8 months; the success of this educational material was just amazing. Since 1999 the education community in Brasil is asking to INPE to prepare a second edition about this CD ROM. Now, that INPE has decided to put available the CBERS images, on internet {free download}, the authors have developed a new edition with CBERS images. The EDUCA SeRe II PROJECT–CD ROM for remote sensing education- Brazilian and South American Capitals is an educational material for remote sensing teaching in grammar and high school, mainly for geographical subjects. The objective of this Project was to develop educational material, using satellite data, for grammar and high school teachers, in order to help them mainly in geography teaching; to disseminate the satellite data for environmental studies in school teacher and student communities; to put available educational material, free, using satellite data for geography studies; to bring to grammar and high school students notice about the Brazilian states capitals, and in South America countries capitals. Besides the CBERS images, it is also available in the CD ROM a database about Brasilia, the Brasil capital, using the SPRING View software. Both, the CBERS images and the SPRING software {geoprocessing software} are free download in the INPE website. The images are available in TIFF format. Besides the images are text about fundamentals of remote sensing, fundamentals of geoprocessing, How to get information from remote sensing images, cartography, Brazilian regions, states and capitals, South American countries and capitals, local photos. This CD ROM is in Portuguese and will be distributed free to school teachers, in Brasil.
