    Abstract
Technology transfer involves finding new uses for innovations, be they machines/tools, processes, methods, techniques, software, and materials. Even state-of-the-art facilities can be "transferred" by providing outside researchers access to them. Many innovations developed for space exploration and science can be applied to new fields, such as medicine, agriculture, energy, environmental protection, and many others. Such technology transfer---known as spin-off or spin-out---can have significant societal benefits. However, the path of technology transfer should not be considered a one-way street. Society benefits not only from the spinning out of space program innovations but also from "spin-in" of technology and expertise from industry, universities, and other government labs.

This brief paper/presentation will set the stage for the "Social Benefits of Space Spin-Offs" session. As an introduction, the paper will elaborate on the definition of technology transfer, begin to explore its benefits, and provide an overview of the functions of a NASA technology transfer office. Some successful spin-outs as well as spin-ins from that office will be highlighted.

This paper also will provide an introduction for the other papers selected in this session, as the author is a co-chair for the panel. Though the paper will use specific NASA Goddard success examples, it will allude to the other presenters once their topics are known, including other NASA presenters. There will be no overlap in content.
