- Abstract
In the near future the Moon will be surrounded by robotic orbiters. ESA’s SMART-1 has already arrived; Japan’s Lunar-A and SELENE are in preparation; China’s Chang’E-1 and India’s Chandrayaan-1 are approved for launch; orbiters are included in NASA’s near-term lunar program. This paper will explore and advocate practical, inexpensive and risk-free ways to include arts in these missions through the use of Earth-Moon-Earth audio channels embedded in existing uplink and downlink transmissions. A precedent exists. A Mars surface-to-orbiter-to-Earth relay data link has been provided by embedding it within the data stream of the Mars Observer Camera. In this paper we discuss technical methods for this embedding on a basis of noninterference with the main mission goals of lunar orbiters. Also we explore some of the artistic possibilities that can be provided by such audio transmissions to and from the Moon.
