- Abstract
Living in extreme environments has been a challenge for man since the beginning of time. Each person develops his or her personal strategies how to cope with hunger, cold, boredom and solitude. The dream of conquering space and planets may be poetical, yet the descriptions of daily activities, of living in the space station given by astronauts seem to belong to a different category in poetry. Our society focuses in providing us with entertainment and luxuries of life to fulfill the void and the silence in life, however, living in space seem to contain very little of the luxuries of our daily lives. The paper explores literature and references on art and architecture, psychology and design principals been used for design of habitats and for living conditions for extreme environments, for space stations. According to empirical evidence boredom and solitude are most critical challenges when living in living remote locations. According to the paper it would be most beneficial to apply also for space habitats and space travel the common architectural and cultural design principals been used for man in different cultures for centuries. The questions to be answered focus both in the physical and emotional space of man.
