    Abstract
With the rapid advance of technology science fiction can turn into science fact. The space elevator is going through this process. In the last five years the space elevator, a ribbon from Earth to space that can be ascended by mechanical means, has moved from science fiction to a system seriously considered for construction.
This lecture will consider prospects for developing the space elevator during the next two decades.
The lecture will also discuss the impact space elevators will have on reducing the cost and complexity of transporting cargo and people to space and the benefits of this exciting capability for space exploration.
