- Abstract
During the past 50 years, space has become an indispensable part of human society. The utilization and exploration of space is likely to accelerate in the coming decades and to result in significant scientific, technological as well as cultural and social accomplishments. Space utilization will become more economically viable and diversified and will have an even greater impact on society. Space exploration both into deep space and looking back to earth from space -- will dramatically accelerate the accumulation of knowledge about our universe and, in so doing, will enrich the human spirit. Because of this vast potential the directions that space activities take in the coming two decades could have an important influence on the welfare and the intelligence of our children and our grandchildren. These directions will in part be determined by the activities of the worlds leading space agencies and by their efforts to collaborate in the achievement of common goals. The distinguished space agency leaders participating in this plenary event will discuss the visions and the plans of their agencies over the coming twenty years. In explaining their plans the space agency leaders will also offer their perspectives on how collaboration can help achieve scientific and programmatic objectives and improve worldwide understanding.
