    Abstract
A two man Arctic ocean kayak expedition was studied as an analog for identifying interpersonal and work performance problems that might occur during planetary surface exploration. Possible changes in interactions with family members upon return were also assessed. The relationship of personality characteristics and perceived stressors and coping methods of both expeditioners and their spouse/partners at home were evaluated over the course of the expedition, upon return, and at a four month follow-up. The decision command structure that evolves in a dyad starting off with a clearly designated leader was also examined. The abrupt termination of the expedition due to weather conditions resulted in significant tension between the decision-making leader and his high achievement oriented team member, handled in different ways consistent with their particular personality characteristics. The partners left at home often experienced the social support of their community as stressful, and were frustrated by the lack of clear information about the safety of the expeditioners. Four month follow-up interviews indicated a growing autonomy and distancing by the women in relation to their spouse/partner, and no resolution by the men of the difficult decision issues faced on the ice. The implications for crew selection for planetary surface expeditions, and anticipation of the kinds of family problems encountered upon return to Earth will be discussed.
