    Abstract

The Mars microlander mission aims at bringing a very low payload mass to the surface of Mars (< 20 kg). This allows to downscale a range of mission elements cutting costs significantly. The objective of the mission is twofold. Firstly, to find life in the subsurface of Mars using a drill and lightweight lab-on-a-chip instrumentation. Secondly, a mini ’billboard’ will be carried on which messages can be placed by companies or individuals. Camera’s will be mounted on the lander such to be able to capture the image with the landscape of Mars in the background. The mission will be financed through non-governmental financial sources and this will require a complete new way of doing missions with combined scientific and commercial goals.
