    Abstract
European Space Policy has been for years designed and implemented by the European Space Agency – intergovernmental organisation integrating space efforts and potentials of its Member States. In the last few years the European Union increased its interest and engagement in space activities launching its first operational programs named Galileo – European navigation system and GMES - Global Monitoring for Environment and Security.

The GMES Program focuses on placing Europe in the forefront of global research and development activities by integrating information concerning environment and security protection coming from different kinds of terrestrial, air-borne and space systems.
The GMES program constituting a part of EU space policy is also open for the new Union Member States, also those not participating so far in the ESA structures. As those countries are obviously stepped back in using of space technologies when compared to their ´old EU´ experienced partners, the introducing of such initiatives is of high importance from the point of view of unifying the Europe on economic, political and social level.

Poland - a country with the most significant potential among the EU newcomers - has made an interesting contribution in the field of GMES overall program. A project called GMES Poland has been created to support and promote participation of Poland and other new EU member countries in the EU GMES general program. A single national point called GMES Information Centre (GIC) has been established in Warsaw to integrate information, advisory and support activities related to GMES in one institution.

The initiative integrating over 30 different units from six countries was focused mainly on supporting the public institutions participation in GMES thematic projects and stimulating the growth of user segment of GMES-related projects in the Central and East European countries.

Among the most important actions undertaken in the course of the realisation of the GMES Poland project were: the establishment of working contacts between Polish institutions and their counterparts from other countries, dissemination of information concerning the potential existing in Poland in the field of Earth Observation (EO) and gathering information from other EU newcomers, promotion of the use of EO data by public users at central, regional and local level, and finally a range of advisory activities.

The aim of the presentation at IAF Congress would be to demonstrate the idea of GMES Poland project, its realisation phase and the outcomes. The presentation shall analyse the strong points, achievements as well as drawbacks of the conducted project. Its scope would be to draw up a number of constructive conclusions, so that the experience collected in course of realisation of the GMES Poland project was not lost, but could serve as an example for any initiatives of this type to be undertaken in the future on the European and global level.
