    Abstract
In China, Satellite Communication Systems are constructing from Single Satellite, Constellation Satellite to Satellite Network, so the design and implementation of network protocol for satellite communication is one of the most important task for us now. And our services of Satellite Communication are extending from narrowband communication to wideband multimedia communication. An optimized network protocol scheme for the Broadband Multimedia Satellite is given in this paper. The features of multimedia communications and its requirement for quality of service (QoS) under different scenarios are analyzed. The implementations of the satellite communication networks by using different protocol are compared. The efficiency models of the service network over different network protocol are setup and analyzed. Simulation analysis for the network efficiency and QoS shows that ATM solution is better for the Broadband Multimedia satellite. Solutions of Multimedia Satellite Communications System over ATM are designed. The scheme includes the architecture of broadband satellite communication system, protocol reference model (PRM), Satellite Packet Switching (SPS) protocol, data encapsulation and framing, services classification, satellite channel allocating and the structure of On-Board Switching, etc. Especially, On-Board Processing, On-Board Switching, and transport mechanisms in broadband satellite communication are addressed in detail. Switching and transmitting of fixed-lengths cell and variable-length packets through satellite channels are implemented. Simulations of the solutions are performed with the help of the OPNET tools. The performances (End-to-Delay, Jitter, and Packet Loss Rate etc.) of the designed protocol/system are analyzed for both voice and video services. Simulation analysis for the network efficiency shows: (1).The time delay of IP protocol cannot fulfill our service requirement now. (2).The combine of CS/FR is a better solution for narrowband service. (3).ATM solution is better for our broadband satellite service now, and our design is feasible. and (4).We will design an optimized IP solution based on the ground Internet protocol for a better connection oriented satellite communication networks in the next step.
