    Abstract

Billions of Dollar were invested in such G.N.S.Systems during the time of the "Cold War" for military reasons(GPS and GLONAS).They were of course intensively used by the military. But slowly, the civilian user started to use them as well, even if in a less precise version. The first such user were mostly from the maritime field. In the last 10/15 years aeronautical user begun using G.N.S.S. as well. The driver of this development is the fact of having access to a system with global coverage.Aeronautical usage of G.N.S.S. accelerated since global availability was suplemented by high reliability since the integrity monitoring systems (EGNOS,WAAS and other)are becoming operationally available. The development of the European G.N.S.S. GALILEO,mostly civilian,is giving a supplementary push towards full usage of G.N.S.S. but lets not forget that there is an other important driver, namelly that now we could have the opportunity to phase out most of the inefficient and very expensive terestrial navigation infrastructure. For the moment this cannot happen for several reason:

1)The great majority of airspace user are not from the airline industry but belong to the General Aviation(more than 70

2)The "space weather" phenomena,in particular in aurora and equatorial areas are limiting regionally the reliability of the monitoring systems and it will be neccessary to find adecuate solutions.

The paper will explore these topics and will suggest possible solutions.
