- Abstract
Over the past two years the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) has become a fully operational Earth Observation system, with elements owned and operated in both developed and developing nations. More recently it has formally joined the International Charter for Space and Major Disasters to support international disaster monitoring. This has allowed those participating developing nations to contribute and work alongside space agencies and organizations which ESA, CNES, JAXA, CONAE, USGS, ISRO and CSA. The exploitation company DMCii Ltd. has been coordinating the five satellites owned by five nations operating as a constellation, and provides data calibration and quality control services. The DMC data has been well received by the international EO science communities, and has established its user bases. DMCii has been experiencing the demand exceeding its capacities, and has started to plan for DMC constellation replenishment. Based on the feedback from users and customers, the DMC continuity constellation will keep the daily imaging and wide swath width capabilities with improved resolution, calibration and performance specifications, whilst focusing on reducing the system cost. The paper will present the DMC continuity mission design, constellation formation and integration with the current DMC. It will also provide update on the successful operations of DMC during last year, and highlight how modest space missions can have a worldwide impact and importance.
