    Abstract
The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) is a research unit of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) responsible for the implementation of the Brazilian space policy. In this paper we summarize the general activities developed by INPE in space science and technology domain. Particularly, activities in space scientific missions, where scientific experiments are developed and embarked on satellite to operate in orbit, and technological missions, involving satellite platform developments, are object of this paper. Nowadays, INPE is developing two scientific satellites – EQUARS and MIRAX, and a university satellite – ITASAT. EQUARS (Equatorial Atmosphere Research Satellite) was conceived to study the atmospheric coupling between dynamical, electrical, photochemical and ionospheric processes, and to apply the data to atmospheric, space weather and climate studies. MIRAX (Monitor e Imageador de Raios X) is an X-ray astronomy satellite mission planned to continuous viewing (at least for 9 months) of the Galactic Center. It will provide monitoring of the X-ray sky and study of transient phenomena. ITASAT is a recent proposal for developing a university micro-satellite, with strong participation of students from Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA) and other universities in Brazil.
