    Abstract
Shocks induced by a launcher at the payload interface is one of the major concerns for the launcher developers. The shocks are generated by stage and fairing separations and by payload ejection as well. In the case of Ariane 5 vehicle, solutions have been developed or are under development for stage and fairing separations by the use of bi-rupture separation systems instead of mono-rupture ones. In this frame, the payload separation, made by a clamp band release, must also be smoothed in order not to become a dimensioning event for payloads.

EADS CASA Espacio has developed under Arianespace and ESA contracts a new device called LPSS (Launch Payload Separation System) which meets the system requirements established by Arianespace. This paper presents the main drivers of the development, and focuses on the mechanism which allows the LPSS to respect the very demanding shock specifications. Description of the mechanism, theoretical analyses and test results are exposed. Then the improvements brought by LPSS are shown dealing with clamp band installation, capabilities and reliability as well.

The qualification campaign for the new separation system as a part of the new Payload Adapter Systems for Ariane 5 is going to be completed in 2006 and a first flight is foreseen at the end of 2006 or beginning of 2007.
