- Abstract
The intent of this publication is to provide an overview of the VULCAIN X technological demonstration roadmap and its progress at mid 2006. The VULCAIN X engine is a LOX/LH2 modular and evolutive ground demonstrator engine for new propulsion technologies, with possible implementation on a LOX/LH2 modular and evolutive first stage called EPFX of the FLEX (Future Launcher Experimental Vehicle). The FLEX is a flying test-bed with 300 to 500 kg payload capability in LEO. As a ground demonstrator, the VULCAIN X engine is based on a VULCAIN 2 engine, and defined to perform systems and sub-systems technological demonstration on test-bench which principal targets are cost reduction, robustness, reusability and VULCAIN 2 evolutions. The first steps of this program are : · Sub-system demonstration, combined with characterization of limited modification at sub-systems or system level on Hardware dedicated to production follow-up tests campaign ARTA between 2005 and 2008 · Full demonstration at engine level in 2009/2010 VULCAIN 2 adaptation for flight and EPFX ground demonstration and validation for flight will follow in order to be able to fly with the FLEX in 2012. The VULCAIN X program is managed by the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The publication will focus on the major achievements during the 2005-2006 period, i.e the presentation of the test logic and the main need for sub-systems and system demonstration at engine level. The kick-off of the program took place at the end of September 2005. The first system passenger tests will take place on the production follow-up ARTA 7 campaign during the first term of 2006.
