    Abstract
Space system simulation is involved in many fields, such as space remote sensing, space communication, navigation \& positioning, and deep space exploration etc.
Even though HLA simulation technology is adopted, simulation systems for different fields may easily be chimneys and construction work may be repeated, if they are developed separately. So, a simulation environment which can be shared by different HLA simulation federations of space system is needed.

To reach this objective, a design rule of hierarchical reusability is established first. Then, by using object-oriented methods, systems engineering methods and the HLA simulation technology, the architecture, the function structure, and the network structure of the simulation environment are designed. The mechanism of simulation federations running and utilizing resources in the environment is also constructed.

Based on this environment, simulation objects can be easily assembled into HLA federates, and HLA federations can run harmoniously and do not disturb one another. The basic mathematical models of simulation are deposited in the form of component library or dynamic link library (DLL). These models are called by the methods of simulation objects, and thus shared by different simulation federations.

To sum up, we design a universal HLA simulation environment for space systems. The environment is of high reusability. In this environment, simulation systems can be quickly set up and can cooperate with others to evaluate the overall performance and effectiveness of a complex space system. The environment is a good tool for space system optimal design.
