    Abstract
Human settlement on Mars has been a long held dream of mankind. It is now necessary the evolving international economy can benefit from cooperation with industry and encourage innovative, break-through approaches to achieve the most cost effective exploration. International projects such as 4Frontiers.com and the Mars Homestead project have already initiated a private effort towards building and sustaining a habitat on Mars. Here, we review the different analogies from the past and see how important lessons can be brought from other sectors, such as transportation (railways), energy (oil and gas), etc. in order help governments reduce the costs on international and national space programs for a feasible, fiscally viable and sustainable human abode on Mars.
