    Abstract
The German Aerospace Center DLR is a research enterprise with around 5100 persons employed in 27 institutes spread over eight field sites in Germany. Achieving scientific excellence is the main corporate goal of DLR. A large number of specific actions is supporting this goal. One of these actions is the regular conduct of internal scientific competitions.

There are two kinds of such competitions. The first is the annual nomination of a “DLR-Center of Excellence”. This label is awarded to research areas with around 50 people, which have performed outstandingly during the past years. The second action is the biennial conduct of a “Competition of Visions”, where every single employee in DLR can offer her or his visionary idea for a two year sponsoring of a study.

The paper will describe the corporate goal and the previous success of these two types of scientific competitions in DLR. It screens the importance of scientific competition for fulfilling the continuous education and stimulation during the professional life. It will assess its impacts and provide an insight in the experiences, which were drawn from the conduct of these activities and how they can also be used as an outreach tool.
