    Abstract

Established in 1945, the Society of Aerospace Engineering Students VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’, has grown into a mature society. It organizes many activities for its members, more than 95The society provides a very vital connection between the student body and the aerospace industry inside and outside the Netherlands. The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and the aerospace industry recognise the contribution by the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ to the positive development of future aerospace engineers by strongly supporting their activities. It provides a very good connection for internships and future employment. The society also maintains the Delft Aerospace Alumni society. This is a worldwide alumni network. The society also contributes to informing high school students about education, research and development and student projects at the faculty by helping in the organisation of information days. The magazine of the society “Leonardo Times” also contributes greatly to this. This magazine is spread around all members of the society, as well as some future students, the alumni and people from the industry.

As the commissioner of Space Affairs of the Society I have committed myself for a year to organize all kinds of space oriented activities for the members of the Society. The main goal is to serve the moral and material interests of space oriented students in all aspects of their student life. This goal can be reached by organizing different kinds of activities for space education and outreach. Some examples of these activities are lectures, excursions, congresses and study tours. Some examples of activities for this year are lectures from André Kuipers and Michel Courtois, excursions to companies like ESTEC and Dutchspace, a small study tour to England and a big study tour to Russia and China. The underlying principle for all activities is to educate people and to get them acquainted with the current and future developments in the space industry. Another important task is to positively contribute to the quality of the space related courses at the faculty of aerospace engineering by monitoring the quality of the education via the quality control groups. This quality control groups give feedback on the courses to bring them to perfection. To be able to fulfill this task, I have to be informed about all current developments in the space sector, as well as all activities within this faculty.

Being the commissioner of Space Affairs you get to know a lot of people from the space industry providing the society with a lot of useful contacts for future activities. The International Astronautical Federation Congress can help in providing information about current “hot” topics in space industry and supplying with a useful network for the society.
