    Abstract
The evolution and globalisation of technologies and markets in the last years are facilitating the access to space for an increasing number of nations. This changing scenario is driving the emergence of new national space initiatives from medium-size countries – including developing countries -, willing to exploit the benefits of satellite-based applications into their national interests.

Different strategies can be adopted from these countries in order to develop their own space sector, apart from the direct acquisition of space services or infrastructure from other countries. Probably the main trade-off these countries have to face lies between the development of its own independent national agency, and the integration within larger supranational agencies. Choosing one or both directions will depend, not only on its own technical and economical capability for development a sustainable space sector, but also on the country’s own geopolitical interests.

This paper will analyse the strategies adopted by different countries aiming to develop their own space sector, including the risks and challenges and the impact in aspects such national interests and security. Reference models and cases will be presented, and some final recommendations will be given, based on these cases.
