    Abstract
The HISPASAT Programme is no doubt one of the most relevant events that have taken place in Spain in the last 20 years. This is due to its technical and industrial significance as well as to the satellite communication services provided. Its social impact is also very important since it has allowed Spain to play an outstanding role in the international market of services and contents in Europe as well as in America.

This paper gives a brief description of the situation in Spain before 1985 concerning the space field and the satellite communication services. The origins and birth of the Hispasat Satellites is described in detail, stressing the problems of strategic, economical, technical and industrial nature encountered at that time as well as those related to the commercial use of the services. The benefits that this system could provide to Society have also been examined.

A brief description of the present Hispasat Satellite System fleet will follow highlighting its most relevant features, mainly in relation with the services provided.

The organization used in order to achieve the success of the programme is also described as well as the results obtained in the short, medium and long terms focusing on the technical and industrial aspects as well as on the commercial use of the system.

Finally an analysis is performed concerning the social impact of this Programme now and in the past together with the degree of international penetration achieved mainly in South America because of the latest satellite launched (Amazonas).

The author participated directly in this Program .
