    Abstract

FORMOSAT-2 is the first Earth observation satellite owned by Taiwan. It is a high resolution remote sensing satellite with 2 m ground sampling distance (GSD) for panchromatic band and 8 m GSD for multi spectral bands. After successful launch on 20 May 2004, the check-out and commissioning of the satellite had been completed in July of the same year. Started from August 2004, the National Space Organization (NSPO) of Taiwan initiated the imagery products business of FORMOSAT-2. The purpose of this paper is to introduce three major activities for popularizing FORMOSAT-2 images to the general public in Taiwan. The first major activity to be introduced is the establishment of a web page entitled “Seeing My House from Space”. Taiwan has 23 administrative counties and cities. A resident can enter the web page and search his house and surrounding areas based on the knowledge of where he lives. This activity has been initiated since mid-2005 and is about 50The second major activity has constructed the web address WWW.urmap.com.tw which provides three kinds of maps: electronic map, satellite image and satellite map. It is clear that “urmap” just represents “your map”. Many informations are included in the maps: governmental institutes, public transportation routes, major buildings, parks, department stores, convenient stores, etc. One can measure the distance from one point to another point, with the estimated walking time displayed. The construction of this web site is 100The third major activity is for the elementary and high school students. NSPO cooperates with the Junior Newton Magazine to develop several kinds of product. As an example, the 2006 calendar demonstrates the application of FORMOSAT-2 images using some cute children language such as: “Oh oh! The water of Shihmen Reservoir changes color again after typhoon pass over. Report, watch out the water quality!”
