    Abstract
Commercialization of outer space is well under way. Space activities, particularly in the field of research and inventions, constitute the starting point for the discussion of intellectual property (IP) protection, particularly focusing on patents. This paper aims at the international legal regime for IP rights. A general overview of the subject matter will primarily focus on the existing international conventions: the Paris Convention, the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The US and EU patent systems will also be analyzed and its relationship with space activities. The goal of the paper is to examine whether the existing regime is sufficient to protect IP in outer space and what improvements should be made in view of the rapid development in outer space.
