    Abstract
As we enter the twenty-first century, the concept of a global spatial data infrastructure and its potential realization has captured the imagination and attention of policy makers, administrators, academia, industry and affiliated professions the world over. Making local geographic datasets available internationally and establishing a common inter-operability framework over shared data interchange protocols are important components of this concept. This movement towards widespread sharing of geographic information on a global level bases itself on the concept of a borderless information flow- smooth, continuous and most importantly, non discriminatory.

The importance and relevance of global spatial data infrastructure cannot be overlooked when we consider its immense potential in addressing global environmental and health challenges, in supporting international telecommunication, commerce, and human development, and in stimulating economic growth and productivity.

However, high degree of government involvement and varying national strategies regarding production and dissemination of spatial data are acting as possible impediments to the borderless data infrastructure. The worldwide exchange and sharing of spatial data is nothing short of Pandora’s Box. At present, there are multiple approaches and policies used by various nations that bring in their own share of legal problems.

This paper will attempt to investigate the possible legal impediments to the adoption of global spatial data infrastructure. It will try to gauge the benefits and drawbacks of various legal options for global coordination, facilitation and cooperation among national and regional data producers/providers and propose possible solutions to make global spatial data infrastructure a reality.
