- Abstract
The international Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) was established in 1984 under the aegis of the G7 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations and has since evolved to become the primary international coordination mechanism for civil space-based remote sensing missions. CEOS member agencies are playing a major role in supporting the needs of the global Earth observation community, as well as national decision-making authorities. This support is provided through the CEOS response to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Implementation Plan, and through the role of CEOS as space segment provider to the international, inter-ministerial Group on Earth Observations. The authors will describe current CEOS support to GCOS and GEO, including the development of innovative “Constellations” concepts for land surface imaging, ocean surface topography, atmospheric composition, and precipitation measurements.
