    Abstract
To remove the ethylene originating from higher plant in controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) and reduce the adverse effects of accumulative ethylene on plant growth and development, a biological ethylene filter (BEF) prototype facility was developed for ground-based experiments. It contains two reactors and each has a volume of about 0.03 m3, in which the mixture of turf and perlite were selected as its substrate, and two kinds of special microorganisms were inoculated in the substrate after being domesticated. The environmental parameters in substrate such as temperature, water content, and pH were all monitored and controlled effectively based on the requirements of special microorganisms’ growth. The temperature, air flux and relative humidity of airflow containing ethylene were also controlled before it entered into the reactors. Verification experiments were carried out after the facility had been installed. The results indicated that it works stably and main technical indexes meet designed requirement, it can degrade C2H4 by 9.04 mg•m-3•h-1 when the air flux is 10 L/min and its ethylene concentration is about 5 mg/m3. Additionally, it can also be used to degrade other trace contaminants when some other special microorganisms are inoculated in it.
