- Abstract
ExoMars mission requires the collection of subsurface samples down to a depth of 2 meters. Once collected the sample is then distributed to a suite of scientific instruments for rover on board analysis. The drill system is based on a multi-rod (multi-stroke) approach which allows the achievement of the desired drilling depth by summing up a string composed by one front end drill tool plus three extension rods. The front end drill tool is equipped with a polycrystalline diamond cutting head and incorporates a motor actuated mechanism capable to collect, hold and discharge sample. The development of the drill is currently entering phase B2 and, in the frame of Phase B1, a number of breadboards have been manufactured and extensively tested in order to support the verification of key requirements, including the capability to reach 2 meters depth. The breadboards developed are: • Drill tool with sample collection capability, • Three extension rods, • Drill box including basic drill functionalities like drill translation and rotation functions. The proposed paper summarises the main achievement of Phase B1 including results of the drill tool test stand alone and of the integrated breadboards testing
