    Abstract
In October 2007 the candidate missions have been selected by ESA's Space Science Advisory Committee (SSAC) and confirmed by SPC in November 2007 for further assessment for a potential launch in the 2017/2018 timeframe. Immediately after the selection process the detailed planning and organisation of the assessment studies started. Until autumn 2009 the selected candidate missions have been studied in ESA’s Concurrent Design Facility (CDF), followed by industrial assessment studies. The CDF was used to verify the baseline concepts and to define, update and iterate on the detailed mission requirements, based on the provided Cosmic Vision proposals and in close cooperation with the respective Science Study Teams in preparation of the industrial studies.

The selected Solar System mission concepts, namely Cross Scale, Marco Polo, LaPlace/Tandem, together with the overall study approach and current status of the ongoing candidate mission assessments will be presented in this paper.
