- Abstract
In the context of developing a long-term strategy for European human spaceflight and exploration ESA has been conducting several activities with stakeholder communities as well as architecture and system studies with industry. In extensive consultations three priority Themes and a set of specific Objectives for each of the domains of science, economy/innovation and policy in Europe were derived. Based on those objectives, architecture studies for exploration of the Earth-Moon-Mars sphere between today and 2035+ have been carried out by industry. The Themes and Objectives from the stakeholder communities also allow to set up a future scenario for each domain, that is science, industry, political and public, respectively. By evaluating those scenarios against a defined set of future space exploration options (Mission Classes, Activities, Locations and Capabilities) synergies within each stakeholder scenario were identified. In a final step of evaluating the scenario synergies across the different stakeholder groups, an integrated scenario was derived that encompasses and represents the interests and objectives of the major European stakeholder groups in space exploration. The integrated scenario provides a basis for Europe to act simultaneously as a strong player and a contributing partner in international space exploration programmes. Against the background of the ongoing activities towards international coordination for future space exploration and the recently published Global Exploration Strategy, the integrated European scenario allows the assessment of areas of common interest with international partners. The paper describes the methodology of the ESA stakeholder consultation process, presents the results for an integrated European scenario for future space exploration and proposes actions towards the implementation of the Global Space Exploration Strategy.
