    Abstract
This paper aims to provide an overview of Japan’s Earth observation policy which has been developed in recent years. Along with the international movement toward coordinating and integrating Earth observations in a global scale, the Earth Observation Promotion Strategy was established in December 2004 as Japan’s first national policy on Earth observation covering both in-situ and space-based observation. The paper outlines primary points of the Strategy and shows how Earth observation programmes are implemented in Japan under the Strategy. The paper also introduces Japan’s policies and plans regarding satellite Earth observation based on the recent documents established by relevant entities such as the Space Activities Commission (SAC) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). In closing, the paper touches upon author’s view on challenges and prospects for future development of Japan’s Earth observation policy.
