    Abstract
An comprehensive, coordinated sustained distributed Global Earth Observation System of Systems(GEOSS),which spans nations and organizations is receiving increasing attentions since 2003. Satellite remote sensing(SRS) are powerful tools for human beings to monitor and understand the planet we live on. This paper summarizes the goal, extent, social benefits, technical methods and operative mechanism of GEOSS, and analyzes the application of satellite remote sensing technologies in ocean environment elemental observation, including sea temperature, salinity, density, sea surface wind, wave, tide, ocean current, sea ice and so on. It provides a review of existing and emerging observation technologies that can address the needs of GOESS.
