- Abstract
The Nimiq 5 satellite will provide Ku-band commercial broadcast communications services for Canada and the continental United States. The satellite incorporates high-power transponders with flexible coverage, using fixed antenna beams. Nimiq 5 will enable high bandwidth use to small terminals, from its geostationary orbital location at 72.7 degrees west longitude. The payload will provide a range of digital, high-definition, and specialty television services. Telesat is the owner of satellite and will operate it from its headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. The satellite will be launched on a Proton Breeze M booster from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, in the third quarter 2009, and put into service in shortly thereafter. The spacecraft was designed and manufactured by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) and is based on the SS/L 1300 satellite bus. This paper describes the Nimiq 5 mission, the deployed satellite system, its development, design, and performance, and operational services, as well as aspects of the Nimiq 5 Program at SS/L and Telesat. Substantive technical content with respect to the Nimiq 5 spacecraft development and design, and description of the Nimiq 5 Program is included. The satellite incorporates new satellite system developments from SS/L and is a unique design; new and original material presents these developments and the design. The author certifies that the paper was not presented at a previous meeting and that financing and attendance of the author at the respective IAC at Glasgow to present the paper is assured.
