    Abstract
The ESA Columbus laboratory was launched and succesfully docked to the ISS in February 2008. Within a few weeks the first science experiments were activated. This paper will give an overview of the preliminary achievements of those first experiments. At the same time an outlook will be given on the planning for future utilisation of the Columbus laboratory in terms of science and equipment.
