    Abstract

Citizens are more and more concerned by pressing issues such as health, environment, safety and energy. To face these challenges, timely access to high quality and reliable information and communication channels are of strategic importance to governments, citizens and the private sector. Space based technologies can help providing solutions to some of these concerns. However, satellite-based systems are still under-utilised and underrated. One of the reasons is that the transversal potential of space capacity is not yet sufficiently exploited. In fact, integration of different space assets in combination with terrestrial systems will enlarge the possible solutions to complex thematic topics. In addition, the interdisciplinary issues, such as Climate and Energy / Climate and Health, are also to be addressed in this approach. In this respect ESA has started an ‘Integrated Applications Promotion’ initiative (IAP) in order to initiate new services and to reach out to new user communities.
Current activities that have started are in the field of ‘Space for Safety’ (i.e. European Bird Migration System of System, Maritime Security Service); Space for Health (i.e. medical support in peacekeeping, disease risk); Space for Transport (risk mitigation for transport of hazardous materials) and Space for Development (integrating space borne data transmission for lake water quality management in Africa).
